Musculoskeletal Therapy and Sports Massage Therapy
Musculoskeletal therapy draws on a range of techniques from sports massage, physiotherapy and osteopathy that work on the muscles, joints and connective tissue, to heal a vast range of musculoskeletal pain, injury and aches.
This treatment can help with issues such as back pain, shoulder pain, neck pain, knee pain, heel and foot pain, strained muscles, aching joints, problems with balance and instability and chronic health conditions such as arthritis and fibromyalgia. An appointment involves assessments to diagnose and understand the initial problem, treatment, then reassessment, to see what has improved. This allows us to track progress and check that you are getting better. The list of the issues this approach can help with is huge. Please feel free to contact me to find out how I can help with your particular problem. |
Remedial exercise
I develop a plan of remedial movements, stretches and exercises to support your recovery and ensure that progress made during treatment is reinforced in your day to day life. I suggest realistic ways of fitting in these exercises into your week, so that getting - and staying - better is achievable
I use a combination of remedial exercise approaches: simple things such as taking the stairs or rotating in your chair when at work to keep your back moving. I show you strengthening exercises, muscle stretches and joint mobilisations to help you get moving in the most comfortable, stable and strong way. I can also suggest appropriate sporting activities that will reinforce your rehabilitation. With people who do particular sports or activities, I typically start by helping you resolve an injury. Often this develops into working with people on activity-specific, functional movements. I am skilled at assessing how you move in your favourite activity, identifying restrictive movement patterns and working with you to improve performance, decrease injury and help you enjoy your chosen sport or activity all the more. I can work with you if you're doing marathon training, endurance events, climbing, swimming, tennis...or gardening, woodturning, doing jigsaws or embroidery! The list is endless! |
Rehabilitative yoga: for balance, flexibility, strength & ease of movement
The yoga I teach is based on scaravelli yoga. It's gentle and dynamic. You move in the way your body is designed to move, you don't stay in one position. This helps you to feel comfortable in a body that moves well, within your own personal capabilities.
I combine this yoga with more traditional rehabilitative exercises. I identify movement restrictions and teach you how to ease through them comfortably. You learn what you are doing that causes pain, stiffness or restricted movement. You then learn how to move without these restrictions. This helps you to feel stronger, get rid of discomfort and prevent it from returning. Your muscles and joints work smoothly and you start to move more freely and comfortably, with a sense of greater strength and stability.
I have a lot of experience working with older people to help you regain confidence in your balance, and improve strength and stability, whether it's for a spot of gardening , a walk to the shops, or to be able to do more strenuous exercise.
I also use this approach with active people to identify and resolve movement restrictions and muscle imbalances. This helps to rehabilitate and prevent injuries, and to develop flexibility and strength in your chosen sport or activity. Often this leads to greater sense of ease and enjoyment when doing your sport, as well as improved performance.
